Sport and racing as a means of achieving social inclusion and the breaking down of any barrier: this is the aim of the “Road to New York” project, a social initiative implemented by Arcese in collaboration with Rosa Associati to allow 5 youngsters with Down Syndrome to participate in the most famous and anticipated marathon of the year.
With this new project, the link between Arcese and sport and its positive values is strengthened. Therefore sport is understood as an instrument of aggregation and social integration. The 5 youngsters involved in this adventure are the confirmation of this: through effort, consistency and commitment they have managed to reach an exceptional stage of the path towards greater self-awareness and higher levels of autonomy.
He embarked on the “Per.La.” path, which led him, today, to work at the Caffè Trentino in Arco. Born in 1992, Andrea practices judo, plays the drums and loves music in all its forms, in particular the famous Italian singer, Laura Pausini.
With a lot of passion for swimming, football and cartoons, nineteen-year-old Diego has just completed his professional training is about to enter the world of work.
Devoted to drums, piano and judo, he also loves walking in the mountains and, of course, training for the race. He is also part of the “Per.La.” project, promoted by ANFFAS for orientation, training and work placement.
Twenty-two-year-old Maria works in a pizzeria and she has had a great passion for swimming since she was a child which has allowed her to take part in numerous international competitions, winning 5 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze medals. She also plays the guitar and dedicates her free time to voluntary work.
Passionate about cinema and in particular thrillers and action movies, Niccolò is 28 years old and works as a waiter at the Hotel Etico and Tacabanda Restaurant in Asti. He is a keen runner and veteran of the New York Marathon.
After the first tests carried out in March at the Marthon Center in Brescia, the 5 youngsters started to follow a targeted and personalised training program. They also had the opportunity to put themselves to the test, participating in two important sporting events: the half marathon on 23 September in Val Camonica and the Deejay Ten in Milan on 14 October. It was then finally time for the long-awaited New York Marathon, during which they were able to run the forty-two kilometers and 125 meters not only for themselves, but also for all those affected by a similar disability. The event marked the conclusion of the Road To New York project, but also the beginning of a new awareness in each of the young participants, who with their commitment and enthusiasm, have managed to make this initiative truly unique.
For over 20 years they have been involved in marketing and consulting in the world of sports at an international level, particularly in running, where they manage over 200 athletes worldwide. The company also promotes sports-related wellness projects aimed at particular categories of patients and children.
